The gallery, and how to stop it being a dead end
What this fixes: Gallery only · No project pages · No alt text · Images not indexed · Thin visual pages
A gallery is where good photos go to do nothing. Somebody scrolls a wall of images, enjoys them, and leaves. No context, no story, nothing to search for, nothing that leads to a call.
You do not need to delete it. You need to make it a route rather than a destination.
Group it
By feature type first, since that is how people think: koi ponds, pondless waterfalls, natural swim ponds, streams, fountains, renovations.
Then by town within each, if you have enough work to do it.
Every image
Named properly before upload, not IMG_2214. Alt text describing what it actually is and where. Compressed to under 200KB.
Every group leads somewhere
Each section links to the matching service page and to the full project pages for those jobs. That is the whole point. The gallery becomes the thing that feeds your project pages instead of replacing them.
Captions earn their place
One line per image is enough, and it should contain something a photo cannot say. "Twelve by sixteen ecosystem pond in [town], built on a slope with a three foot drop" beats "Beautiful pond".
The best gallery page in this trade
A before and after grid, same angle, side by side, grouped by feature type, each pair linking to the full project page. Nobody else in your market is doing it, it takes an afternoon, and it is more persuasive than anything else on your site.

One page per town, built around a real job you did there. This is how you show up when somebody nearby searches for a pond builder.
