Schema markup, what it is and which three you need

CodeModerate30 minutes

What this fixes: No LocalBusiness schema · No Service schema · No FAQPage schema · Thin schema · Not in AI answers

Schema is a block of code that tells search engines what your page is about in a format they do not have to guess at. It does not change what a visitor sees. It changes how much of your page a search engine and an AI answer tool can understand and quote.

Most pond contractor sites have either nothing or a generic Organization block their theme added. Three types matter.

LocalBusiness

Goes on the homepage or the contact page, once. It states the business name, the real address, the phone, the service area, the hours, and the categories. This is how a search engine connects your website to the business it sees on Google, Facebook, and the directories. If your name, address, and phone differ between those places, this is also where the confusion starts.

Use the exact same name, address, and phone as your Google Business Profile. Character for character.

Service

One per service page. It names the service, who provides it, and where it is offered. This is what lets a search engine understand that the page is about pond repair in a specific area rather than being vaguely about ponds.

FAQPage

Goes on any page with a question and answer section. This is the one with the most direct payoff, because question and answer content formatted this way is what AI tools quote when somebody asks them a question.

Rules

Never mark up something that is not on the page. If the FAQ schema has a question the visitor cannot see, that is a violation and it can cost you.

One LocalBusiness block per site, not one per page.

Use your real address. If you work from home and do not want it public, use a service area business setup rather than a fake address.

Test every block in Google's Rich Results Test before you call it done.

Where it goes

WordPress: an SEO plugin's schema section, or a code block in the footer. Squarespace: page settings, code injection, page header. Wix: the SEO panel, structured data markup. Divi and Elementor: a code module set to the page, or the site footer for LocalBusiness.

Use the generator in this toolbox and it will write all three with your real details filled in.
