Making the site look as good as the work

ChecklistModerateVaries

What this fixes: Dated website · Site does not reflect quality of work · Losing to cheapest bid · Weak brand

Tick these off as you go. This page remembers where you got to, so you can come back to it another day.

Plenty of pond contractors build six figure features and present them on a website that looks like it costs forty dollars a month. A homeowner deciding whether to trust your business with their backyard reads that gap, even if they could not tell you what is wrong.

You do not need a redesign to fix most of it. You need consistency.

Pick two fonts and stop

One for headings, one for body text. That is it. A serif heading with a clean sans body reads as considered. Five fonts reads as a template somebody never finished.

Pick a palette and hold it

One dark neutral for text, one light neutral for backgrounds, one accent colour, and one deeper version of that accent for hovers. Four colours. Use the accent sparingly, mostly on buttons, and it will read as expensive. Use six colours and no amount of good photography will save it.

Pull the accent from your own work rather than a colour wheel. Wet slate, copper, the green of planted margins.

Space is the thing that separates good from cheap

Amateur sites are cramped. Add generous space above and below every section, keep body text to a comfortable reading width rather than the full screen, and give photographs room.

Photography rules everything here

One excellent photo beats six average ones. Cut the weak ones rather than filling a grid. Never mix your own work with stock, because the stock is always obvious and it makes people wonder which ponds are actually yours.

Consistency across pages

Every service page laid out the same way. Every heading the same size. Every button the same shape and colour. Inconsistency reads as carelessness, and carelessness is the last thing somebody wants in a contractor.

Mobile first, honestly

Most of your traffic is on a phone. Check every page on your own phone. Tap every button with your thumb. If the phone number is not tappable and the menu is awkward, nothing else on this list matters.

What to cut

Sliders. Video backgrounds. Pop ups on arrival. Animated counters. Anything that moves without being asked.
