YouTube, and why your videos get no views

ChecklistEasy3 hours to fix a whole channel

What this fixes: No youtube presence · No video · Abandoned channel · Weak brand search presence

Tick these off as you go. This page remembers where you got to, so you can come back to it another day.

Most contractor YouTube channels are not underperforming because the videos are bad. They are underperforming because of four fixable things that have nothing to do with the footage.

1. Your titles are dates

"Pond Build 5-14" tells YouTube nothing and tells a human nothing. Nobody searches for a date.

Title every video as the thing somebody would type: "Building a Koi Pond on a Steep Slope in your town", "Why Your Pond Turned Green in June", "What a Pond Cleanout Actually Looks Like".

Go back and retitle everything already on the channel. It costs an afternoon and it is the highest return work available on YouTube, because old videos start getting found for the first time.

2. Your handle is a mess

Auto generated handles with trailing numbers look abandoned. Claim a clean one, ideally matching your business name, and use the same handle everywhere else.

3. Your thumbnails are inconsistent

Pick one style and hold it. Big readable text, four words maximum, a strong image, same font every time. Proofread them. A typo sitting on a thumbnail for two years is a small thing that undermines everything around it.

4. You have no short form

You do not need to film anything new. Every build video you already have contains five or six shorts.

Two more worth doing

Pin a comment on every video introducing your company, what you do, and where you work. It shows to every new viewer.

Write real descriptions. Two or three sentences about the project, the town, and a link to the matching page on your website.

The honest expectation

YouTube is slow. It is not the channel that fills next month's calendar. It is the one that has 200 videos working for you in three years, still being found, still sending people to your site. Start it because in two years you will wish you had.
